Editorial summary
This review retraces the development and competing definitions of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), explains analytical and calculation approaches, and assesses appropriate and inappropriate applications of the sum parameter. It stresses that TVOC is not toxicologically based and is unsuitable as a stand-alone health or odour metric. FLEC appears in reviewed chamber/cell emission data rather than as a new experiment.
